COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Friday was a special day for Vietnam War veterans.

Commander Tommy Olds is the man behind a ceremony at Vietnam Memorial Park in Columbia.

Olds began his military career when he was 18 doing reconnaissance missions in Vietnam.

At the memorial, people shared their memories of that troubled time in American history.

One of the doctors at Dorn says he wouldn't be alive today if not for Vietnam veterans.

"It is because of all of you that I am here and speaking," said Dr. Dai Chinh Phan with Dorn VA Medical Center. "It means so much to me to be here and say thank you to you in person.

Vietnam combat veteran Bob Harris said this is a special ceremony.

"Vietnam veterans are special kinds of guys," Harris said. "It's like a family that never got recognized.  Anytime you find a soldier that knows another soldier that's been to Vietnam, it's just a bond there."
