Deadly fire leads to criminal charges against family members

Posted: Updated:

Three members of a Clarendon County family are charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult following a house fire that killed an elderly woman in March.

Colbert, Zephariah and Miriam McCray are each charged with abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult resulting in death. Caroline House is charged with failure to report abuse of a vulnerable adult.

According to the arrest warrants provided by the State Law Enforcement Division, the charges are related to a fire that occurred on March 26 at a home on Goings Place in Summerton. Earthy McCray, the mother of Colbert and Zephariah, died in the fire.

Investigators have not determined what started the fire, but they Earthy McCray could not evacuate because a door had been locked from the outside. The McCrays told investigators their mother suffered from Alzheimer's and dementia and they locked the door to keep her from leaving the house when she was home alone.

House's arrest warrant says she was aware that the door was locked and along with Colbert and Miriam McCray, was responsible for Earthy McCray's care.

Colbert and Miriam McCray are out on bond, along with House.
