Flooding shuts down roads and bridges in Hanover

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

Our First Warning Weather Team warned us that flash flooding would be problem, and that is exactly what happened Wednesday.

Roads were flooded, bridges closed and school children diverted because of the heavy rain that has crushed the Richmond metro region for the last two days.

The rain has stopped for now and that is welcome news for many particularly in Hanover County, where all this water made for a difficult day.

The bus ride home from school for Patrick Henry High School student Noah Spangler is usually uneventful.

"As the bus pulled up it started to rain heavier," Spangler recalled.

The ride home today was an adventure.

"There was water that overtaken the road behind the bridge and part of the bridge and was about to completely take over the bridge," he said.

Noah's bus driver waited to assess the situation and after watching other cars push through, decided it was safe.

"We made it across," Noah said."It was a lot of water."

It was a similar situation on Coatesville Road where the bridge near Steve Bland's house was almost unrecognizable.

"People who lived here 20 or thirty years say they've never seen it this bad," said Bland.

To keep this big problem from becoming an enormous one Bland, a former Richmond Police Officer, went to work.

"I started helping people with traffic telling them not to go down there," he said.

That flooding problem was widespread across Hanover. NBC12 viewers shared photos of flooded roads and yards all across the county.

Meanwhile Noah is home safe and sound. Maybe a bit wet, but fortunate they escaped a potentially dangerous situation.

"It was very fast moving across the road," he said. "I definitely didn't feel too safe."

The Parsons Road Bridge in Hanover is also closed right now -- because the rain actually weakened the bridge's support span.

It might be wise before heading out this week check with the NBC12 traffic team for updates on road closures.
