COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Gov. Nikki Haley has appointed a Columbia man to fill the spot left Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman after he passed away almost two weeks ago.

In an executive order signed Tuesday, Haley appointed William E. "Earl" Wells as the new coroner.

Harman died on April 18 after more than three decades in office. He was 79.

The longtime coroner had been in a care facility for a little over a year following a February 2013 car accident.

Wells will fill Harman's role until a July 1 special election.
