Perspective: Recent accidental shootings

The following Perspective is an expression of opinion by the Editorial Board at WIS, and presented by General Manager Donita Todd.

A lot of South Carolinians like having guns. The latest ranking by "Guns and Ammo" magazine says 42% of the Palmetto State population owns at least one gun, putting us in the top 20 nationwide for gun ownership.

Gun owners are fond of pointing out the vast majority of their numbers pay attention to the rules of responsible possession and use. But just last week over a six day period, we reported a sickening series of shooting incidents that resulted in two deaths and two other wounded victims.

That may not be such shocking news if it weren't for the fact that in each of those four incidents, the person pulling the trigger was between 5 and 7 years old.  And those victims included a 4-year-old and two 5-year-olds along with an adult.

So what's the answer? More regulation, mandatory safety training, tougher penalties for those who fail to secure their weapons from small hands? Critics including those who fear erosion of 2nd Amendment rights will tell us car crashes and swimming pools also claim young lives.

But let's agree on one thing: Anyone who owns a gun needs to spend some time right now considering all the possibilities and making sure that weapon is stored safely---preferably locked----and far away from the little people who are our future.

That's my Perspective.  What's yours?
