BAXTER SPRINGS, KS (KCTV) -

One person is dead, 25 people were injured and dozens of homes and businesses were destroyed by a tornado in the southeastern Kansas town of Baxter Springs, authorities said late Sunday night.

Officials said the nine were treated at area hospitals. It wasn't immediately clear whether the death was related to the storm or not, officials said.

Up to 70 homes and 25 businesses were destroyed, according to a news release from the Kansas Adjutant General's Office.

The tornado hit in Cherokee County about 5:45 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

Jason Allison, Cherokee County emergency services manager, estimated the tornado was three blocks wide. The tornado traveled southwest to northeast.

First responders from multiple agencies were house to house assessing damage and looking for those injured by the tornado. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Baxter Springs Community Center at 11th Street and East Avenue.

Baxter Springs has about 4,200 residents. It's located 6 miles north of Quapaw, OK, where officials said the same tornado left two people dead.

Authorities were turning people away who aren't Baxter Springs residents, and you must have valid driver's license to enter the area. A voluntary curfew was in effect until 6:30 a.m. Monday.

The phone lines to the Baxter Springs Police Department are down. If you need immediate emergency assistance, call 911.

Here are some important numbers to note:

Baxter Springs Fire Department: 620-856-3536

Baxter Springs Police Department:620-856-2112

Cherokee County Sheriff's Office: 620-429-3992

Anyone wanting to assist in the cleanup should report to the Baxter Springs High School parking lot starting at 8 a.m. Monday. Appropriate attire should be worn.

Those in need of help are asked to go to the Baxter Springs Community Center located at 11th Street and East Avenue. Two other shelters are open at the First Baptist Church located at 10th Street and East Avenue and the First Christian Church located behind Walmart.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback issued a disaster emergency proclamation at 6:30 p.m.

In Hammond, 5 miles north of Fort Scott in Bourbon County, a grain elevator was blown over onto a rail line, derailing eight train cars. Six homes were also damaged.

About 75 miles north, Linn County emergency manager Douglas Barlet said some barns and outbuildings were destroyed, but no one was injured when at least one tornado struck late Sunday afternoon near the Missouri border.
