MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Ruth community in Marshall County has come a long way since April 2011.

A tornado hit the area, killing five people in one family and destroying many homes.

Nearly three years later, residents on Frontier Road have rebuilt their homes and the neighborhood. Residents said there's more space now because they lost all the trees.

Deborah Head said not only has the landscape changed, but the people have too. She said they're thankful and grateful, especially for the help they received after the storm.

"The kindness…you can't say enough for the kindness that was shown," said Head. "Church groups from all over the country. Little towns we've never heard of showed up and wanted to build. Wanted to do whatever they could and wanted to help rebuild people's lives, and bottom of my hearts, we all appreciated it more than there's words to say."

Five members of the Hallmark family were killed in the tornado. A memorial honoring their memory sits near the area that was hit.
