CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Campus police at UNC Charlotte used pepper spray on a group of unruly people outside a dance Thursday night.

Officials say a fight broke out near the Student Activity Center where the Gym Jam dance was being held.  Officers shut down the dance just before midnight.

The dance started at 10 p.m. and police say several hundred students were outside waiting to be admitted when people in the group started fighting.

Officers say they tried to intervene and disperse the crowd. When some in the group "physically interacted" with police and refused to leave, officers used pepper spray.

According to campus police, the group that had been fighting left and officers shut down the dance.

University officials say more than 1,100 people attended the Gym Jam dance, which featured a DJ. The school says there are normally between 500 and 1000 people and the event is usually held at another location.

The school allowed non-students to attend with proper ID and a $5 cover charge. Campus police say there were no incidents inside the dance and they believe the fracas outside involved people not affiliated with UNCC.

University officials say no one required medical treatment.  One student was taken in for intoxication, another was arrested for fighting and one had an outstanding warrant.

Administrators say they will review the incident and determine how to re-structure the Gym Jam events to avoid problems.
