COLUMBIA, SC (WIS/WMBF) – A Midlands High School has been ranked 4th in the state, based on state assessment performance and college preparation, according to a ranking of the Best High Schools in 2014 from U.S. News and World Report.

Dutch Fork High School was the only high school in the Midlands to rank in the Top 10 highest-ranked schools in South Carolina. The Lexington/Richland District Five school ranked 4th in the state and 696th out of more than 19,400 public high schools, earning it a silver medal.

Dutch Fork is the top non-magnet school in the state.

Of the 207 high schools eligible for a gold medal, only two schools in SC received one, according to the report. Twelve schools received a silver medal. Only 6.8 percent of schools statewide received a gold or silver medal. The gold and silver award rankings reflect how well-prepared students are for college, based on Advanced Placement tests, and a range of other performance indicators.

South Carolina ranks 36th in the country overall.

The U.S. News and World Report rankings show Maine is 2014's leading performer, with 22.2 percent of eligible schools earning gold or silver medals. North Carolina ranks 23rd in the nation.
