SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC) – The top candidates seeking Shelby County residents' vote for the district attorney's office spoke to high school students about their passion for the law on Wednesday.

Shelby County DA Amy Weirich and Judge Joe Brown were featured speakers at a special seminar for high school students interested in careers in the justice system.

The seminar, which was held at Southwest Tennessee Community College, attracted freshman and sophomores from the downtown Memphis charter school, New Consortium of Law and Business. Students are like sophomore Asia Knox were there. She wants to become a judge or an attorney.

"I wanted to learn more about law and business like what should I do to get into those fields to become a lawyer or get into the criminal justice fields," Asia said.

During the seminar, students heard from two people who have years of experience in the justice system: Judge Joe Brown and current DA Amy Weirich. Brown is preparing to run against Weirich for district attorney.

"We all work together every day to make sure that we are doing our job, which is to reserve to do our job, which is to pursue the guilty and protect the innocent," said Weirich.

Both speakers encouraged students to work hard and develop careers in the justice field.

"This is an interesting field that you have picked," Brown said. "It's probably the one that is most central to it, is to be an American."

Topics ranged from defending the constitution to prosecuting those who would abuse it. It was quite a lesson and something the future voters say they will never forget.
