South Carolina high schools ranked 36th in the country in new report

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – South Carolina ranks 36th in the country in a state-by-state ranking of the Best High Schools in 2014 2014 from U.S. News and World Report.

Of the 207 high schools eligible for a gold medal, only two schools in SC received one, according to the report. Twelve schools received a silver medal. Only 6.8 percent of schools statewide received a gold or silver medal. The gold and silver award rankings reflect how well-prepared students are for college, based on Advanced Placement tests, and a range of other performance indicators. 

No local high schools were in the top 10 highest-ranked schools in the state. The highest-ranked local school was ranked 11th, the Mayo High for math Science and Technology in Darlington, followed by Aynor High, coming in at 12.

The U.S. News and World Report rankings show Maine is 2014's leading performer, with 22.2 percent of eligible schools earning gold or silver medals. North Carolina ranks 23rd in the nation.
