TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Shortly before 2 a.m. crews from Northwest Fire were called to the scene of a building fire on the west side.

According to NWFD officials they received multiple 911 calls about a building in the 2600 block of W. Ruthrauff Rd. that was on fire.

Crews arrived to find the building engulfed in flames, with the first Engine Company Captain declaring it a 'defensive' fire.  According to NWFD a defensive fire means no firefighters were allowed inside the building, that conditions were too dangerous for crews.  As crews were fighting the fire a large portion of the roof caved in, according to the NWFD release.  Firefighters had the fire under control with 26 minutes of the first crew arriving.

No injuries were reported and after a thorough search of the building no one was found inside, said NWFD officials.

Investigators were still on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.  According to NWFD officials the building was abandoned and ownership of the building is pending as part of the investigation.
