The following Perspective is an expression of opinion by the Editorial Board at WIS, and presented by General Manager Donita Todd.
WIS Investigates is starting a new series looking at missing person and cold cases across our state. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, 800,000 children are reported missing each year, and in South Carolina right now there are 41 unsolved missing persons cases listed. Missing persons and unidentified human remains cases are a tremendous challenge to state and local law enforcement agencies.
Media coverage and public interest help keep the victims' faces out there, increasing the odds that someone -- and all it takes is one -- might come forward with needed information.
And yet only four or five cases each year receive significant national media attention, and WIS wants to change that. That's why we are devoting some of our resources to this important matter. We are creating a special section of our web site to missing persons where you can search for information about cases and resources for how to help solve them. Click here to go to the web site and join us in this effort to find SC's missing persons.
