RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) -

Richland County Sheriff's Department deputies are investigating an officer-involved shooting near Interstate 20 and Broad River Road.

Sheriff Leon Lott says he received a call from a resident complaining about a drug dealer in the area.

"It was an operation that was a plague on this community," said Lott. "The neighbors were calling. The neighbors called and said, 'Look, we got a drug dealer, we've got a lot of stuff going on.' We know that he was selling to kids in school. Two of the kids in the apartment right now I know go to high school. So we feel like he was selling to our high school students

Lott dispatched the drug suppression unit Tuesday morning to investigate the complaint.

As officers tried to stop the suspect near Marley Drive and Broad River Road, he drove off throwing drugs out of a small blue Honda, the sheriff said.

When officers caught up with the suspect, Lott says he tried to run over Deputy Kirk Willis, who pulled his gun and fired as many as five shots.

"He felt like his life was in danger at that point," said Lott.

The suspect was hit at least one time in the arm.

"All the shots were directed toward the suspect's vehicle, so there was no danger to the community," said Lott. "Officers were very aware of the line of fire when he was firing his weapon. He was firing his weapon to eliminate the threat that was trying to kill him."

The suspect was later apprehended on Briargate Circle and transported to an area hospital. The sheriff's department identified him as 22-year-old Ty-Meek Tyheen Payne. He is charged with attempted murder and possession of marijuana, but additional charges are pending.

Investigators also raided his apartment.

"We went into the apartment to secure it," said Lott. "Inside there we found another male, three female juvenile subjects and we also found a gun in plain view and some drugs in plain view."

No officers were injured in the incident.
