WAYNESVILLE, NC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

Authorities said both lanes of westbound Interstate 40 in the North Carolina mountains are back open after a tanker truck overturned near the Tennessee state line.

The Department of Transportation said the chemical tanker containing sodium chlorite wrecked Monday afternoon at mile marker 6 in Haywood County and closed the entire road.

Greg Shuping of Haywood County Emergency Management said fire departments and hazmat teams were clearing the scene on Monday night.

Officials said the truck was heading to Georgia carrying a dozen 100 gallon containers of the sodium chlorite. They said six of them spilled.

Haywood County official Bill Miller said there was a drainage pipe under the highway and some of the spill got into the Pigeon River, but did not know how much.

Officials are recommending anyone wanting to drive through the mountains on I-40 to take Interstate 26 in Asheville west to Johnson City, TN, then take Interstate 81 south back to I-40 in Jefferson County, TN.

The interstate reopened about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to NCDOT.

NCDOT suggested the following detour for drivers headed west on I-40:

  • Take Exit 53-B for I-240 west then take Exit 4-A for I-26 West.
  • Continue on I-26 West until reaching I-81 near Johnson City, TN.
  • Take Exit 8-A for I-81 South. Continue on I-81 South to re-access I-40 West in Tennessee.
