Chapin council votes to strip veto power from mayor

Posted: Updated:

A feud between the Mayor of Chapin and three council members continued Thursday.

Mayor Skip Wilson and Councilman Gregg White weren't there as the rest of the council voted unanimously to strip the mayor of his power to veto agenda items.

They also voted to pay the interim town attorney, reimburse the town's petty cash fund and refuse to pay the mayor's legal fees after they sued him.

Three council members say the law is on their side, and they do have the right to form agendas and call special meetings. The mayor disagrees and says Thursday's meeting was illegal.

"We have tried to get things on the agendas as a quorum of three," said Chapin Mayor Pro Tem Vivian "Bibi" Atkins. "He's refused to put them on the agenda."

Councilwoman Atkins said there's no solution in sight and couldn't recommend one.

Meanwhile, the mayor says he never considered showing up to Thursday's meeting and said what was voted on should be legally reversed.
