SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Dozens of graduates walked down the aisle of an auditorium at Spartanburg Community College on Thursday night to receive their GEDs and one soldier stood anxiously backstage to surprise his mother.

"Her getting her GED is a huge deal," said U.S. Army Specialist Brandon Shreve. "I recently went to Afghanistan on July 13 and I got back November 28."

He served his time and now he's stationed in Germany, which is where his mom thought he was still located.

So, she was surprised to find him at her graduation Thursday night. His name was announced and he walked onto the stage.

The crowd clapped and cried and so did his mother, Dona Shreve, as Brandon hugged her.

"She had no clue whatsoever about it," he said.

Dona Shreve said she was in shock.

"As soon as I saw him, I just - that was it!" she said. "I was just like, I was like - did I hear that right?"

She said while her son was in Afghanistan she often thought about his safety.

"It was something that went through my mind all the time. But I couldn't worry myself with it," she said.

But, now he's home and they're together.
