Special ed teacher arrested for child porn; investigation expanding

WASHINGTON PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A Washington Parish special education teacher was arrested Wednesday on child pornography charges.

Murray J. "Joey" Duncan Jr.,  45, a junior high special education teacher at Mt. Hermon, was booked with pornography involving juveniles and jailed in the Washington Parish Jail. Bond was set at $50,000. While in jail, he was arrested again on Thursday for aggravated incest. Bond has not been set for that charge, and he remains in jail.

"We wanted to put him in jail where he belongs, and get him away from children and children away from him," said Deputy Chief Mike Haley with the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office.

The investigation began with a complaint about sexual abuse involving a juvenile. Four alleged victims eventually came forward, ranging from 5 to 15 years old. At least two of the victims were allegedly molested on a church overnight trip to the Baton Rouge Zoo, and two others at a church camp in Loranger.

"We have some other parents who are calling us and coming forth, and we're investigating their concerns right now, and we feel certain that they may lead to some more incidents that we will uncover," said Haley.

In addition to teaching at the school, Duncan was involved in other activities that placed him in contact with juveniles at athletic, church and camp events.

Duncan gave consent to search his home, where child pornography was seized, the sheriff's office said. An analysis of his computer, thumb drives and other accessories is being conducted. So far, investigators say they've found 49 pornographic images involving children on Duncan's computer. Each image carries a possible five-year sentence.

"This grieves us very very much," said Haley. "We are delighted to place this fellow in jail, and we hope that we're going to be able to keep him in jail for a long time and totally isolate him from any children."

Investigators are looking into whether Duncan had inappropriate contact with any of the students at Mt. Hermon.

The investigation continues, and additional charges will be forthcoming from Washington Parish and likely other jurisdictions, according to a Washington Parish Sheriff's Office news release.

When confronted with the allegations, the sheriff's office said Duncan confessed to improper behavior with juveniles and possession of child pornography. He told investigators that he had "been battling...demons for a long time," the sheriff's office said.

If any parents or guardians have concerns about possible improper contact between Duncan and their child or any other children, they are asked to contact the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office at (985) 839-3434.

Duncan's arrest was a collaborative effort between Washington Parish Sheriff's Office investigators, the Department of Children and Family Services and Rayburn Correctional Center.
