RALEIGH, N.C. -

Two men in their 30s died Sunday during the Rock ‘n’ Roll half-marathon, race officials confirmed.

Race organizers said the deaths appear to be from natural causes and were treated near the finish line during the race Sunday morning. About 12,000 runners were expected to participate in the half marathon and the full marathon near downtown Raleigh.

Race officials confirm that two men, ages 35 and 31, died during the race. One of them men collapsed between then 10 and 11-mile markers and then second runner collapsed just before the finish line on Fayetteville Street.

Wake County EMS and medical personnel were immediately on scene and attempted to revive each runner.

Event medical director Dr. P.Z. Pearce issued a statement about the deaths just before noon Sunday.

"We regret to confirm that two participants passed away at today's half-marathon. We are greatly saddened by these tragic losses and our prayers go out to the each of the runner's family and friends.”

News of the deaths shocked runners who found out after they crossed the finish line.

‘It really makes you think about how fragile life is,” said Vance Weintraub. “You can one day be ready to accomplish one of the greatest accomplishments of your life and then you pass away mid race, it’s horrible.”

Pearce said that the families of the two men were notified.

“It’s definitely very sad situation and our hearts go out to their families,” said Natalie Vail, a runner at Sunday's race.

Wake County EMS said they checked on 29 runners during the race and two spectators. Ten had to be taken to the hospital for various conditions, but most were heat or stress related due to the race.
