Columbia's independent 10 day film festival kicks off Friday

Indie Grits, Columbia's own film festival kicks off its 8th year Friday.

Indie Grits is teaming up this year with Girls Rock to launch a massive concert.

This year the independent film festival's actually stepping away from the silver screen and exploring video game design and promoting the slow food movement with restaurants here in the midlands area.

The 10 day festival is centered around the Nickelodeon Theater on Main Street but events are also taking place at other nearby locations like the Tapp's Art Center.

The growth of the film festival marks a two-fold success for the organizers. For one, it means there's a growing interest in Columbia's film movement but it also means there's growing support for the arts throughout the Midlands.

"Really on main street you've got this great joining of forces, with us, you've got the Tapp's Art Center, the Museum of Art, the Columbia City Ballet, One Columbia, all here within a couple of blocks it's really great to see all the energy that's building up," said Andy Smith with Indie Grits.

The party tonight will run until 11 p.m. in the back parking lot behind the Nickelodeon, in between Main Street and Assembly.

There'll be food and drinks for sale on the lot.

At the end of the night, they're going to put up a fake bonfire to have one big jam session with everyone at the party.
