Voters to decide on Sunday alcohol sales countywide

Voters in Kershaw County will decide in November if people should be allowed to buy alcohol on Sundays.

Tuesday night the county council voted 5-0, with two members absent, to put the referendum on the November ballot. The county council member who proposed the ordinance, Gene Wise, was absent from the meeting.

Wise was approached by some business owners in the Lake Wateree area about proposing the ordinance.

"Let the people decide," said Council Member Jimmy Jones. "It's not about the political agenda. It's about the people's agenda."

The law would affect Sunday alcohol sales in the unincorporated parts of the county, including Lugoff. The cities of Camden, which allows Sunday alcohol sales, Bethune and Elgin are the only portions of the county not covered by the law.
