Second unrelated shooting happened in Vista on same night of Five Points brawl

Posted: Updated:

A few days ago, we showed you exclusive video of the fistfight and shooting that left a young man wounded in Five Points.

Columbia Police tracked down the suspect in that shooting and charged him with three counts of attempted murder. Now, we've learned there was a second unrelated shooting shortly after that one in another major Columbia entertainment district.

The second shooting incident involved even more gunfire than what occurred in Five Points, but when the shots rang out down in the Vista, none of the eight bullets fired made any contact with people. Still, it was a close call.

Police say the Vista shooting appears related to a disturbance or a dispute that began inside a club called Jet Nightlife, which is located next to Jillian's on Gervais Street. Club security ejected some people around 2:30 a.m. on March 29.

There was some additional activity in or close to a parking lot in front of the club and someone pulled out a handgun, firing eight times. The bullets hit two vehicles -- at least one of them being driven at the time. Another slug traveled across Gervais and through the window of a restaurant called Le Peep, which was closed at the time.

Jet Nightlife manager Myron Chinn says his security force did throw some people out, but he says he has extensive security on hand including off-duty police officers. He says the club is not a trouble spot.

Acting Columbia Chief Melron Kelly says police did make a couple of arrests for marijuana possession as they investigated.

"Officers were clearing the parking lot, kind of dispersing the crowd. And as the crowd was dispersing, officers that responded to the club heard gunshots. Sounded like they were coming from the Gervais Street area, so we responded there as well on foot and in vehicle. Found some shell casings," said Kelly.

The department has not found the gunman.
