WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – One of the men accused of being involved in the death of a teen just before Christmas in 2012 pleaded guilty in court Monday.

Christopher Cromartie pleaded guilty to second degree murder and robbery with a deadly weapon in connection to his involvement in the death of Joshua Proutey.

Cromartie was sentenced to at least 35 years in jail for both charges. His lawyer is asking for a mental illness evaluation while Cromartie's in prison.

During the hearing, Cromartie pleaded that he was not a bad guy.

"I never intended for anyone to die," Cromartie said. "Punishing me will not be justice at all. I want to be with my son."

Proutey's sister refuted his statement, saying he is "the bad guy."

The judge told Cromartie to remember that Proutey's mother and aunt forgave him and that he should take heed at what was said to him in court.

Proutey was shot in December 2012 while heading to his car after working an event at the Community Arts Center on Second and Orange Streets. He was approached by a group of men who demanded money.

District Attorney Ben David said Proutey pulled out $10 to hand over, but asked to keep it. According to David, Proutey was ordered back into his car, but froze, so Quintel Raheem Grady shot him.

Grady pleaded guilty in December to his involvement in this case.

Two other people, Daniel Henry and Jasmine Dottin, face charges in this case. They are expected to be in court in June.
