KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Police are ruling a man's death a suicide after his son found his body in the trunk of a car in a parking garage in a posh downtown community.
On Tuesday the victim was identified as 50-year-old Hitch Nelson of Kansas City, MO. Other than saying his death has been ruled a suicide, police didn't provide any further details.
The area at 612 Central St. is made up of mostly lofts and two of the adjacent lofts share the same parking garage. The vehicle was parked on the lower level. Neighbors say they use the garage all the time and they simply can't believe this happened here.
Neighbors arriving home late Friday evening were stunned to find out a tragedy of this kind happened in a place they believe is safe.
"I'm shocked. I mean, it makes me sick. I can't believe this is happening so close to home and it's very worrisome," said neighbor Alexandra Humphrey.
KCPD said they received a call just before 3 p.m. of a man believed to be in his 50s found dead in the trunk of his car inside the parking garage near Seventh Street between Wyandotte and Central. His 12-year-old son found the body, told someone and that person called police.
Jamie Meek often parks in the garage.
"I've been in that garage, in and out of it all day. And to know that that was going on, it's kind of scary," Meek said.
She said the garage, much like the surrounding area, is generally pretty safe, but this death raises questions about access.
"Somebody had the capacity to get in there. That's the only thing that's scary," Meek said.
Which is why she and Humphrey want answers.
"I'm definitely shaken and I don't even know what to think about it," Humphrey said.
Police have not confirmed whether the victim and the boy lived in one of the apartment buildings, but the son knew where his father's vehicle was parked.
It is believed Nelson was last seen earlier this week.
At the time, police said the death was considered suspicious. That means foul play was possible.
