SC closing minimum security prison

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

South Carolina is closing one of its prisons.

Corrections Department Director Bryan Stirling tells The Associated Press onThursday that the Campbell Pre-Release Center is closing.

The Columbia facility opened in 1975 and is a minimum-security prison formale inmates who have served most of their sentences and have the opportunityto participate in work release programs.

Stirling says inmates at Campbell will be moved to other facilities. Thework-release and labor crew programs will be transferred to other Columbiafacilities.

Stirling says Campbell's officers may transfer to vacancies at otherprisons, while others will stay on to work as contraband officers at otherfacilities on the Columbia complex.

Corrections officials say the rate of repeat offenders dropped from about 31percent in 2008 to 27.5 percent in 2010.
