82nd Airborne paratrooper dies in Afghanistan

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - A 27-year-old paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne died of non-combat related injuries in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Tuesday, the U.S. Army reported.

Capt. James E. Chaffin, of West Columbia, S.C., was a fire support officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Abn. Div., according to the Army.

"We have suffered a great loss in the 3-319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment and express our deepest condolences. Capt.  Edward Chaffin was an exceptional officer and absolutely value added to our team," said Lt. Col. Phillip G. Jenison, Chaffin's battalion commander. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We will never forget him."

Chaffin had been on post at Fort Bragg since June 2010.

Chaffin had been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Basic Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge.
