Father uses unique punishment after daughter didn't clean room

LONG CO., GA (WTOC) -

A father's unique punishment for his daughter's messy room has garnered more than 6,000 likes on Facebook and over 2,000 comments.

He didn't intend for it to go this far. He said he was just trying to think outside of the box to get his daughter to clean her room.

After getting fed up with his daughter's messy room, Craig Schlichenmeyer decided that he'd clear out the mess for her.

He moved her entire room to the driveway, including her bed, desk and computer and leaving it all with a sign that read "Haley, room moved to driveway. Clean it next time."

"One day I had enough of it, I picked up her belongings and set her room up in the driveway," said Schlichenmeyer. "I just set her room up the same way it's set up upstairs in the driveway. To shock her.

Twenty-four hours after the punishment, he said his daughter, Haley, is a great daughter and great student and that he didn't mean to humiliate her. He just wanted to get his point across.

"No, my intent was to surprise her a little bit and to take ownership of her room and doing the right thing," he said. "When we tell her to clean it up, we clean it up."

This isn't the first time we've heard about a public punishment locally. Just last month, a Port Wentworth mom made her daughter hold a sign at the front of their neighborhood for bullying.

So the question is, do these public reprimands work?

Jodi Spires has been a licensed counselor for 15 years, and she said this can work on some levels, but parents must be careful.

"I think you really have to know your teenager," said Spires. "And you have to know the punishment, because my concern would be what's being taught, the punishment or the lesson? And I would think if the punishment is too severe, we lose the teachable moment for the teens."

As for this father, the two have moved on, and he said their family is very close.

"She's a great student and honor roll student, and we're proud of her," said Schlichenmeyer. "It was just an issue of her room being clean."

Schlinchenmeyer said he and his daughter spent today together, painting her room.

And in response to some of the negative Facebook comments? He said he's raising his family in the way he sees fit.
