Greenville attorney to face Gov. Haley in GOP primary

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A Greenville attorney and former circuit court judge filed Saturday morning to challenge Gov. Nikki Haley in the June GOP primary.

Tom Ervin told WIS he wants to bring "competent conservative leadership" back to the state and feels every agency that Haley has touched is in crisis.

The most pressing issue for Ervin and part of why he decided to run for governor has to do with the controversy at the Department of Social Services.

Ervin said Haley has attempted to cover up the investigation instead of worrying about the children in state custody.

Ervin first held public office in 1979 when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives from House District 7 in Anderson County, according to his biography on his law firm's website. He was re-elected to the House of Representatives in 1981 without opposition.

Ervin plans to make a formal announcement sometime this week.

Primary Election Day is June 10.
