CofC students stage walk-out over McConnell hire

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

College of Charleston students upset over the recent hiring of Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell as the college's new president have staged a campus wide walk-out Friday afternoon.

Around 1 p.m., hundreds of students showed up at the Cistern Yard voicing their disapproval of McConnell as president of the college.

One person held up a sign saying,"We Have a Voice." One man was spotted carrying a confederate flag to the event.

A Facebook event page called for students, faculty, and staff to walk out of their classes at 1:15 p.m. and go to the Cistern Yard.

"We are asking all students and faculty to join us in protesting the Board of Trustees politically motivated appointment of Glenn McConnell to the presidency of CofC," the event page states

Those who are participating in the protest will meet at the Cistern Yard at 12:15 p.m. Event creators say students will be asked to knock on classroom doors and call people outside.

The college's Board of Trustees voted unanimously on March 22 to offer the position to McConnell, a Civil War re-enactor and member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Officials say 18 out of 18 board members voted in favor, with two board members not participating in the vote.

The college's current president, George Benson, is resigning effective in June and plans to return to teaching.
