Police: Man acted as Prattville woman's caretaker, took control of bank accounts

A Montgomery man is at the center of an elaborate con that left a Prattville woman out of thousands.

Police say he moved in on the elderly victim, gained her confidence and then ripped her off.

Captain Diane Hamm, who oversees the Prattville Police Department's Investigative Division, says 74-year-old Glen Glassmeyer, of Montgomery, weaseled his way into the victim's life by posing as a caregiver. The victim is in her mid eighties and police did not reveal her identity.

Glassmeyer moved into the woman's Prattville home and took her to outings with her friends, keeping up his alleged act as her caretaker.

When he had gained her trust, he set his sights on her bank account.

"He came into her life acting as a concerned person. He gained power of attorney and went in and changed her accounts and decided to put his name on her accounts and then he started to transfer money in and out of her accounts," Cpt. Hamm told WSFA.

According to police, Glassmeyer made different purchases and was trying to get the victim to buy him a house. But he didn't stop there.

"He decided that he was going to marry her and he did," Hamm said.

Investigators say the scheming went on for nearly a year before the victim caught on, realizing she was out hundreds of thousands of dollars. Police were not specific on the amount of money that turned up missing from the victim's accounts.

She reported everything to police and an investigation was launched.

"We got involved because a call was made from the victim, alleging that a subject pretending to be a caregiver of hers had taken control of her bank information and had taken a large amount of money from her account without her permission," Hamm explained.

Glassmeyer was arrested March 21 and charged with Financial Exploitation of the Elderly. He is being held in the Autauga County Metro Jail on $30,000 bond. A preliminary hearing has been set in April.

Cpt. Hamm says he may have targeted other victims.

"There's a possibility that there are other victims out there," she said. "If somebody enters your life under the pretense of being your caregiver and says they're not going to charge you anything, it's best to contact a family member or friend or someone to get some advice before you start letting them into your life."

When it comes to the money taken from the victim, police say they'll work with the court system to get it back by seeking restitution.

As for victim, Hamm said: "Her main concern was that this subject does not go after any other elderly people and them become victims as she has become."
