SC House approves presidential primary bill

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The House has approved a bill clarifying that the State Election Commission is responsible for South Carolina's future presidential primaries.

The measure approved Wednesday would delete from state law a reference to the 2008 election cycle.

Future presidential primaries will be funded through the budget like any other election, offset by filing fees paid by candidates.

Until 2008, South Carolina's political parties ran and paid for their presidential nominating contests. But legislators put the state agency in charge of that year's wide-open race and approved one-time funding.

As the 2012 GOP primary approached, four counties sued, arguing lawmakers did not update the law. The state Supreme Court turned back the counties' challenge, but it created uncertainty with the GOP contest just weeks away.
