Movie Madness: Cream of the crop still on top

Posted: Updated:

(RNN) - Surprise, surprise - there were no surprises in this part of the bracket, which enters the second round today.

All the top four seeds advanced, and the closest thing to an upset was No. 12 Moneyball taking out No. 5 Ali.

This is called the Grand Slam Region for a reason.

No. 1 Bull Durham vs. No. 9 Cool Runnings

Bull Durham, 1998

Stars: Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins

Synopsis: Crash Davis is an aging catcher closing in on the minor league record for home runs, not as big an honor as it sounds. His two biggest challenges are "Nuke" Laloosh, a young pitcher with a "million-dollar arm and five-cent head;" and Annie Savoy, who sleeps with one new player every year because she believes it helps them play better. Annie picks Nuke over Crash, but ultimately gives both players something they both need more than they realize.

Cool Runnings, 1993

Stars: Leon, John Candy, Doug E. Doug

Synopsis: A fictionalized version of the first Jamaican bobsled team's efforts to make the Winter Olympics. Former Olympic bobsledder Irv Blitzer (Candy) and a group of misfits come together as a team to rise above adversity and achieve their dream.

No. 2 Field of Dreams vs. No. 7 The Blind Side

Field of Dreams, 1989

Stars: Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones

Synopsis: After hearing voices ("If you build it, they will come"), Iowa corn farmer Ray Kinsella (Costner) turns the voices to a vision and then makes it a reality by building a baseball diamond. When he does, the infamous 1919 Chicago White Sox show up - as does as his late father.

The Blind Side, 2009

Stars: Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron

Synopsis: Homeless teen Michael Oher (Aaron) is taken in by Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy (Bullock, McGraw). With help from his new family, a tutor and coaches, Michael begins to succeed in the classroom and on the football field. He goes on to receive a Division-I football scholarship and becomes a first-round draft pick for the NFL.

No. 3 Any Given Sunday vs. No. 6 Days of Thunder

Any Given Sunday, 1999

Stars: Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, Jamie Foxx

Synopsis: Embattled head coach Tony D'Amato (Pacino) has to deal with in the major elements that make up a major professional football team - young players scrapping to replace aging, injured veterans; an owner who is more interested in saving money than spending it; and the constant expectation to win, no matter what. Foxx steals the show as third-string quarterback Willie Beamen, who goes from nobody to star almost overnight, and lets the fame go to his head.

Days of Thunder, 1990

Stars: Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid

Synopsis: Open-wheel racer Cole Trickle (Cruise) is thrown into NASCAR's top circuit with no experience and an aging crew chief (Duvall), and is quickly overwhelmed by the speed and competitiveness of the races. He is fired after wrecking the driver who took his spot on the racing team, but he's granted an opportunity to drive in the Daytona 500 when another hated rival undergoes surgery. The race comes down to a duel on the final lap, and Trickle finally turns his immense talent into success.

No. 4 Major League vs. No. 12 Moneyball

Major League, 1989

Stars: Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Rene Russo

Synopsis: The woeful Cleveland Indians become the inherited property of a widowed ex-showgirl, and she becomes bent on making the team so terrible the city will let her out of the stadium lease so she can move the franchise to Miami. Has-been manager Lou Brown, relief pitcher Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn and a group of no-name players get back at the new owner by doing the unthinkable - winning.

Moneyball, 2011

Stars: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Synopsis: Forced to do more with less, Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane bucks traditional baseball thinking and builds a team based primarily on statistical analysis. He and right-hand man Peter Brand (Hill) are seen more as villains than revolutionaries, and they butt heads with reluctant, old-school manager Art Howe (Hoffman).
