BOONE, NC (WBTV) -

Twenty months after a Watauga County Sheriff's Deputy was gunned down in the line of duty, a major bridge in the area was dedicated in his memory.

Tuesday morning, friends, family and law enforcement gathered to honor Deputy William Mast with a bridge named in his honor.

"My husband would have been so honored by the naming of this bridge," said his widow, Paige Mast.

The bridge is on Highway 421 just outside of Boone. It crosses the South Fork New River. Family members gathered for a group photo at the bridge just before lunch on Tuesday. "

We're thankful that William is being remembered," said his mom Angie Wall. The family hopes that everyone who crosses the bridge will see the signs with the deputy's name and think of him and all the other law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line.

As they were there, they also thought of the family of Jason Crisp, the U.S. Forest Service Officer who was killed in the line of duty in Burke County two weeks ago.

"We know what it is like to get that call," said Angie Wall. "We know the hurt."  The family hopes no one else ever has to go through what they have been through. "It still hurts," said William's grandmother Willa Wall.

"It doesn't go away."  Even so, the honor of having a bridge named after the slain deputy does make them feel proud, they said.

"It helps, it surely does," said Willa.
