Adkins' return to pen sparks Cavs' turnaround

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Darton State Cavaliers have returned to the winning form they've grown accustomed to recently, winning nine of their last eleven games.

For Cavaliers head coach Scot Hemmings, the answer is quite simple.

"Since we put [Davis Adkins] back in the bullpen, we've won nine of eleven," Hemmings says.

The sophomore pitcher was the best closer in the GCAA last season, striking out 35 batters in just 46.1 innings and leading the NJCAA in ERA.

Because of that success, Hemmings and the Cavalier coaching staff decided to move the former Crisp County star to a full-time starter this season.

"It's a great coaching move," Hemmings jokes.

With Adkins as a starter, the Cavs opened the season 6-9 with seven of the nine losses coming in the final two innings.

Hemmings decided it was time to move Adkins to the bullpen, and says the righty was all for the move.

"He says the more I can pitch, I'm better off," Hemmings says.

And it's Adkins "closer's mentality" that Hemmings believes makes him so effective at the end of games.

"We could put him in, bases loaded with nobody out, or up by 15 runs and he's the same guy. That's kind of what you need," Hemmings says. "He's just one of those guys who can throw a slider, a changeup, and a fastball for a strike. And he's got a funky arm action. And he competes."

Hemmings, Adkins, and the Cavaliers try to make it ten of their last thirteen Wednesday at South Georgia State in Douglas.
