Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is expected to undergo surgery on his ankle later this week.

According to the Panthers, Newton has been having issues with soreness with his ankle since the end of the season.

The surgery will be done by Panthers team physician Robert Anderson at Carolinas Medical Center on Wednesday.  It is expected to take Newton about four months to recuperate.

"The ankle was sore after the San Francisco game and we wanted to see if rest would calm it down, but it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it," head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said.

Newton is prepping for his fourth season with the Panthers and has started in all of his 48 games with the team.
