CPD captures inmate who escaped police headquarters

The Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center inmate who managed to escape the confines of the Columbia Police Department Headquarters has been captured, according to police.

Police investigators say 25-year-old Justin Kyle Jenkins was apprehended at Elmwood Cemetery around 4 p.m. after his escape from CPD.

Jenkins was being interviewed in connection with a property crimes case when he left the police department at 2 p.m.

Officials say Jenkins was handcuffed to a desk in a locked interview room and was left unattended for a short period of time.

Police say when an officer returned to the interview room, Jenkins was gone. Investigators say Jenkins may have tampered with the door lock to escape from the building.

The search for Jenkins began immediately with a sweep of CPD's headquarters. When officers turned up empty-handed, the search perimeter increased.

We'll have more on this story as it develops.
