Richland One bus slams into tree, students uninjured

Posted: Updated:

Thirty-one students were uninjured Friday morning when their school bus crashed into a tree on North Beltline Boulevard, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Department spokesperson Jennifer Timmons says the accident happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. when the bus driver drove off the side of the road to avoid hitting a car in front of the bus.

The bus driver told investigators that the bus's brakes failed.

At that point, according to Timmons, the bus slammed into the tree, causing minor damage to the bus.

Richland School District One spokesperson Karen York confirmed the students were being taken from Lower Richland High School to the Heyward Career and Technology Center when the accident occurred.

York says the bus will be looked over by state bus maintenance workers to determine if the brakes did fail.

The bus driver was not issued a citation, and the students were picked up and taken to school via another bus.
