5,000 years of Chinese history will be performed this weekend in Columbia.

Shen Yun translates to "the beauty of divine beings." The performance includes Chinese classical, ethnic and folk dance accompanied by a full symphony orchestra.

"A lot of Chinese culture had been lost after the cultural revolution in China," said principal dancer William Li. "For the past 60 years, basically in China, you can't really find much traditional Chinese culture.  For me, I'm actually able to bring Chinese culture to audiences across the world through Chinese classical dance. To me that's something that's pretty special and important."

"The picture people see of China today, sometimes it's just,  you know, the economy and all the bad things and negative things, pollution, that are happening right now," said principal dancer Cindy Lin. "I think it's really nice for us to be able to bring this tradition to the American audience and let them see this other side of China that they normally wouldn't think about."

Both Li and Lin have been touring with Shen Yun for several years. They both say they love sharing the culture of their ancestors with the world.

"I think it's a really special opportunity for me to bring this across the world," Li said. "I think it's pretty great."

"It's our mission to revive traditional Chinese culture," said Lin. "And we visit themes like compassion, truth, loyalty, courage, throughout the whole performance. And what we really want the audience to take away with them is not only the colors or the choreography.  We want them to walk away with the spiritual message.  It's something we hope will be uplifting."

Performances are Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Koger Center in Columbia.
