GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A retired elementary school teacher has found a new type of therapy to help her battle breast cancer - spending time at an Upstate gun range.

Laura Getty was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery on Tuesday. Already a survivor, Getty beat thyroid cancer 40 years ago.

However, she said nothing prepares you for the news.

"I really was stunned," Getty said. "Got the news on Feb. 14, on Valentine's Day. Was really stunned."

Getty's son Jeoffrey knew his mom was scared and as a teacher himself, he came up with a lesson plan. He wanted his mom to conquer her fears. Never having fired a gun before, he suggested she go to the shooting range.

"I honestly really enjoyed it because it took so much focus all I had to do was focus on the target," Getty said. "It was very therapeutic."

Her son said he wanted her to know that no matter what comes up in the surgical appointment, for her to know to focus and take things in small steps because she "can get through anything."

Blown away by the staff at Palmetto State Armory, Jeoffrey Getty wrote an email to the staff thanking them.

"In the end it says the reason I'm writing this email and the reason it meant so much is my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last week," said Adam Runola, who works at the armory.

He said the email touched him so much, he had to do something. So he had a pink custom AR built for Laura Getty and made a second to be raffled off, with the proceeds going to Laura Getty's medical expenses.

"I honestly couldn't be more surprised if someone said you just won the Powerball," Laura Getty said. "I never could have predicted that I would own a gun of my own and on that was made just right for me and it must be just right because I did pretty good job for the first time firing it."

"I wanted her to see that challenges with her diagnoses and stuff are something that can be understood and we can come up with a plan of attack," Jeoffrey Getty said.

And Laura Getty said she wants to make sure if anyone takes one thing from her experience, it is to get your regular mammogram because early detection is key.

Palmetto State Armory called and said due to the enormous response they've been getting from this story, they have posted the raffle online, so anyone can buy in a chance towin a pink AR-15 like the one Getty uses. Click here to make a donation and enter to win.
