A Charleston native represented South Carolina at the nation's capital Wednesday for the 11th annual Special Olympics Capitol Hill Day.

Athlete Katie Smith earned a bronze medal in alpine skiing at the Special Olympics World Winter Games. Athletes, program leaders and family members from 38 states went to Washington, D.C. to meet with congressional leaders and encourage them to continue to support programs that help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

While in Washington, Smith met with South Carolina Congressmen James Clyburn and Trey Gowdy. Special Olympics South Carolina Executive Vice President Sue Maner accompanied Smith to Washington.
