COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The city commission formed to represent the community in the Bull Street development plan met Monday afternoon at City Hall.

Three of the commission's six members attended the meeting, along with chairperson and Columbia City Council member Brian DeQuincey Newman.

They were briefed on the proposal to finance construction of a proposed ballpark by Jeff Palen from the city Finance Office.  It was the same presentation Palen gave to City Council at its meeting last Tuesday. He also answered members' specific questions.

Palen told the commission as of now, the city is planning on a total financing commitment of $57 million dollars.

Newman asked committee members for topics to be discussed at future meetings.  Among them, an update on the Camp Asylum archaeological dig, a Bull Street site tour from Historic Columbia Foundation, and opportunities for local small disadvantaged businesses.

Krista Hampton with the City Manager's office told the group site developer Bob Hughes has agreed to abide by Columbia's procedures for awarding contracts and procurement to local small disadvantaged businesses.

The meeting lasted 45 minutes.  The group meets again May 12.
