Dutch Fork community sports green to honor slain student

LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) -

Students in the Dutch Fork community joined together Thursday to show their support for a classmate killed last month.

Students and teachers wore green at school to honor 17-year-old Da'Von Capers.

Capers was fatally stabbed outside a Cook Out restaurant in Lexington last month after a basketball game.

Some students from Irmo, Chapin and Springhill High Schools also came to show their support.

"It's important to us because we are student leaders at our school and to show our support for a fellow district five student, said Chapin High School senior Matteo Macaluso "It really puts perspective on our day to day lives and even though we are 18, about to graduate and head off to college, it puts life in perspective to us to live life every day to its fullest."

Kierin Dennis is facing a murder charge in connection with Capers' death though he is claiming "stand your ground."

Dennis' attorney said Dennis feared for his life and was a victim and not the aggressor.

Dennis remains in the Lexington County Detention Center.
