'Battle of the Badges' basketball game raises $9,500 for Lexington Co. child

They work as partners everyday to serve the Lexington County community, but Saturday night the Sheriff's Department and Public Safety Department faced-off in the 5th annual "Battle of the Badges" basketball tournament.

"We like to be competitive," said Lexington County Sheriff's deputy Joe Auckerman. "There's always been a thing between firemen and police and public safety."

As they trade their badges for basketballs and bragging rights, there's also more at stake.

"For over four years now, we have raised a total of just a little over $23,000, which has been enough to make the wish come true every year for a child and even put some back for another child as well to help their wish come true," said Tony Banco, an apparatus operator with Lexington County Public Safety Department.

This is the fifth year the sheriff's department and the public safety department asked the public just to show up so they can show out and ‘Make-A-Wish' come true for a local child fighting a life-threatening illness.

"On an average, it costs about $6,000 through ‘Make-a-Wish' to grant each child a wish, and send their family wherever they want to go. Whether it's Legoland or Walt Disney World," said Auckerman.

Which makes this "Battle of the Badges" really a fight for so much more.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department won the "Battle of the Badges" basketball game 70-55. The event raised $9,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
