Mississippi man springs back to life after being declared dead

LEXINGTON, MS (WAPT/CNN) - A Mississippi man declared dead was just minutes away from meeting the embalming needle when family members say he came back to life.

"I asked the coroner what happened and he said, 'It was a miracle,'" said Holmes County Sheriff Willie March.

"I stood there and watched them put him in a body bag and zipped it up," said Williams' nephew Eddie Hester.

The coroner said he checked Williams' pulse around 9 p.m. Wednesday and pronounced him dead at his home in Lexington.

"That was at 10:30, and at 2:30, my cousin called me and said, 'Not yet,' and I said, 'What you mean not yet?' He said, 'Daddy's still here.'"

After the coroner helped move Williams to Porter and Sons Funeral Home, workers were getting ready to embalm him when they saw the bag start to move.

"He was not dead -- long story short," said funeral home manager Byron Porter.

Porter says it's the first time he's ever seen anything like it: a man inside the zipped up body bag, kicking to get out.

Porter wouldn't say just how close Williams was to the full embalming treatment.

"We definitely were not going to do anything to him once we saw that he was alive," said Porter.

Paramedics rushed Williams him to the hospital, where family members say they're happy he's alive.
