WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) - The U.S. is expelling three Venezuelan diplomats.

A State Department spokeswoman says the move is the U.S.'s answer to Venezuela's expulsion of three U.S. diplomats.

"In response to the Venezuelan government's decision to declare three foreign service officials persona non grata, we on February 17, in accordance with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the State Department has declared three officials from the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, D.C. persona non grata as well. They have been allowed 48 hours to leave the United States," said Jen Psaki.

Venezuela expelled the U.S. diplomats earlier this month in connection with accusations that the U.S. is behind anti-government protests in the South American country.

The U.S. has denied the allegations.

Venezuelan Embassy First Secretary Ignacio Luis Cajal Avalos, First Secretary Victor Manuel Pisani Azpurua, and Second Secretary Marcos Jose Garcia Figueredo were declared persona non grata. They have 48 hours to leave the United States.
