Sheriff: Correctional officer threw bleach, water blend on Alvin S. Glenn inmates

Posted: Updated:

A 25-year-old former correctional officer has been charged with two counts of assault after investigators said he threw a chemical blend of water and bleach on two Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center inmates while he was employed there.

Phillip Young was arrested by Richland County sheriff's deputies on Friday.

Sheriff Leon Lott said the incident occurred back on Jan. 31 following an argument between Young and the other inmates.

Both inmates were splashed by the mixture in the upper body and were immediately taken to Palmetto Health Richland and were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Alvin S. Glenn staff members initiated the investigation and reported it to the sheriff's department.

Young, who was hired in June of 2010, was terminated after the investigation, according to county officials.
