Dorn VA says OR reopened

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

After four months, surgeons are once again operating at Dorn VA Medical Center.

All eight of the medical center's operating rooms were closed in October when the sterile environment was contaminated by matter from the air filtration system. WIS continued to follow this situation since uncovering the problems with the air filtration system in the fall.

Dorn VA officials confirmed surgeries resumed last week after the operating rooms closed Oct. 18 when particle matter was found by staff on supplies. The hospital revealed in November that matter came from HEPA filters.

Surgeries resumed in December, but days later when matter was discovered again, the operating room was closed. Urgent procedures were moved to partner hospitals while Dorn's operating rooms were shut down.

One veteran that WIS contacted after learning surgeries started again said he's concerned about an upcoming surgery at Dorn VA. He's been unable to get his questions answered about his surgery and was unaware the operating room at Dorn VA reopened.

Dorn officials have said that at least 130 surgeries were moved to other medical facilities, but WIS is waiting for the exact number of those referred to other hospitals.
