Gas leak pinched off, students return to class

Posted: Updated:

Students at Meadowfield Elementary School have returned to their classrooms after SCE&G and the Columbia Fire Department pinched off a gas line leak on Galway Lane.

Department spokesperson Brick Lewis says the leak was near Olde Knight Parkway. The school was evacuated merely as a precaution.

Several roads were closed in the immediate area while crews worked to get the scene under control.  Nearby homes were also evacuated.

Richland One spokesperson Karen York says Meadowfield students and staff were safe and were moved away from the area of the leak.

Students and staff had access to restrooms and the school was making arrangements for bagged lunches during the two-hour evacuation.

"They're safe and well supervised," said York during the incident. "We're monitoring the situation. We don't see a need at this time for parents to pick up their children."

SCE&G will work to make repairs, which should take a couple of hours.
