HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Remington Outdoor Company is headquartered in North Carolina and has plants in New York, Arkansas and Kentucky. A tough gun control law in New York is making it less likely for Remington to continue expansion in that state.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo touts it as the toughest gun control law in the US. The "SAFE Act," passed in January 2013, requires background checks and bans high-capacity magazines and certain assault weapons. Cuomo has gotten a lot of criticism and blame after two other gun companies moved out of the state since the act's passage.

Governor Robert Bentley welcomed firearm manufacturer Remington to the state Monday, after their announcement that they would be expanding with a Huntsville plant.

Remington President George Kollitides said Alabama's more lenient gun laws were a factor in the firm's decision to move to Huntsville. "We are obviously disappointed with the New York SAFE Act. We think it is unconstitutional. We are hoping that will be overturned," he said.

Craig Brown, owner of Craig's Guns and Tactical, said he is not surprised. Many of the guns Remington manufactures are now illegal in New York. Brown said it's not just gun shop owners like him that are affected by the New York law. "Why support a state that won't support you? The more you limit products that people use, the more you limit sales revenue," Brown said.

With thousands of new jobs now headed to Huntsville, the outlook is only positive for North Alabama.
