PORTSMOUTH, IA (KCCI/CNN) - Edwin "Bud" Skalla didn't dress lavishly, his friends say. And he mostly kept to himself.
But when he recently died, many found out how big of a heart he had. He left millions of dollars in land to his parish.
Skalla left 292 acres of farmland worth nearly $3 million.
"I've been a priest 43 years and I've never seen one like this," said Fr. John Dorton, a Catholic priest at his parish.
But he was just getting started.
In all, He left land to Catholic churches in 13 Iowa towns, worth in total around $10 million.
"Everybody's going to benefit in the whole town whether they are a member of the parish or not," said friend Glenn Wingert.
